You do not need to clean before your cleaners arrive. But a few minutes of preparation make a real difference in what the team can reach, and how much of the visit goes into actual cleaning.

The idea is simple: the more accessible your surfaces are, the more thoroughly they can be cleaned.

The day before

Put away personal items and valuables. Jewelry, cash, important documents, and anything you would rather nobody handle are best stored out of sight. It keeps them safe and lets the team clean around your home without hesitation.

Clear countertops where you can. A kitchen counter covered in mail, bottles, and chargers can only be cleaned around. A clear one can be cleaned edge to edge.

Secure delicate or sentimental items. If something is fragile, irreplaceable, or simply precious to you, move it somewhere safe or let the team know where it is.

Pick up clothing, toys, and belongings from the floors. Floors are one of the most time-consuming parts of any cleaning. When they are clear, vacuuming and mopping reach every corner.

Before the team arrives

Share special requests in advance. If there is a room you want extra attention on, an area you would like skipped, or a product preference such as scent-free cleaning, tell the company before the appointment rather than on the day. It is much easier to plan for than to adjust around.

Plan for pets. Let the team know if your pet is anxious or uncomfortable around strangers. Keeping pets in a safe, separate area keeps everyone relaxed, and it keeps curious paws out of freshly mopped floors. We cover this in more detail in Cleaning With Pets at Home.

Keep children away from active cleaning areas. Cleaning solutions, wet floors, and equipment are best kept out of little hands.

Sort out access and parking. If you will not be home, arrange a door code, key, or lockbox so the team can get in at the scheduled time. If parking is limited or requires payment, share instructions ahead of time.

What you do not need to do

You do not need to supply products or equipment. A professional team brings its own vacuums, mops, microfiber cloths, and cleaning solutions.

You also do not need to "pre-clean." Tidying helps; scrubbing does not. Leave that part to the people you hired. If you are wondering where the line is, read Should You Clean Before the Cleaning Company Arrives?.

A short checklist

  • Valuables and personal items stored
  • Countertops cleared where possible
  • Delicate or sentimental items secured
  • Floors picked up
  • Special requests shared before the day
  • Pets settled in a safe area
  • Access and parking arranged

Why it matters

Preparation is not about making the home look clean before the cleaners arrive. It is about giving them room to do their best work. A team that spends the visit cleaning, not moving belongings, leaves you with a more thorough result in the same amount of time.
