It is one of the most common questions people ask before their first cleaning, usually with a little embarrassment: "Should I clean up before you come?"
The short answer: tidy, but do not clean.
Why tidying helps
A cleaning team is there to clean surfaces, floors, and fixtures. Every minute spent moving clothes off a bed or stacks of mail off a counter is a minute not spent cleaning. When surfaces are clear, they can be cleaned edge to edge instead of around.
Light organizing is part of a regular cleaning: things are straightened as they are cleaned. Decluttering a room, sorting belongings, or putting things back where they live is a different job.
What to do the day before
- Put away clothes, shoes, toys, and bags from the floors
- Clear kitchen and bathroom countertops where you can
- Store valuables, cash, and important papers
- Secure delicate or sentimental items
- Run the dishwasher, so it is empty when the team arrives
That last one matters more than it seems. Dishes are loaded into the dishwasher when it is empty, but hand washing is not part of the service. A sink full of dishes means the sink itself cannot be cleaned.
What you can skip
- Scrubbing the bathroom
- Mopping or vacuuming
- Wiping down appliances
- Dusting
That is what you hired the team for. Pre-cleaning does not improve the result, and it takes away the time you meant to get back.
The one exception: heavy buildup
If parts of your home have heavy buildup, a lot of clutter, or areas that have gone a long time without attention, the answer is not to clean beforehand. It is to tell us. That kind of home usually needs more time or a deep cleaning, and knowing in advance means we can plan the right service instead of rushing.
There is no need to feel self-conscious about it. Describing your home honestly is what lets us prepare an accurate estimate. And if the home turns out to be quite different from what was described, we talk with you before changing the service or the price.
A quick test
Ask yourself one question about each room: can the surfaces and floors be reached? If yes, you are ready. If not, a few minutes of picking up will make the visit noticeably more thorough.
